FOOD WASTAGE
Nearly 690 million people were undernourished in 2019, up by
almost 60 million since 2014. Nearly
half of all deaths in children under age five are attributable to under nutrition
and, regrettably, stunting and wasting still have strong impacts worldwide. In
2019, 21 per cent of all children under age five (144 million) were stunted and
49.5 million children experienced wasting. The
effects of the pandemic will increase child hunger, and an additional 6.7
million children are predicted to be wasted by the end of 2020 due to the
pandemic’s impact. The
situation continues to be most alarming in Africa: 19 per cent of its
population is under-nourished (more than 250 million people), with the highest
prevalence of undernourishment among all global regions.
An estimated 1.3
billion tonnes of food is wasted globally each year, one third of all food
produced for human consumption, according to the Food
and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the
United Nations.
The amount of food lost or wasted costs 2.6 trillion USD annually and is more than enough to
feed all the 925 million hungry people in the world - four
times over.
ECO EATS
Eco Eats is a growing food technology
innovation that is capturing the hearts and attention of several community
members in pockets across Canada as they prepare to make the world a better
place. What they do is connect food to people and non-profits so everyone has
sustainable and consistent access to good and nutritious food.
Ever since Canada’s National Zero
Waste Council unveiled its National Food Surplus Reduction Strategy in which
the council targeted an annual 50% food surplus reduction by 2030, there’s been
a lot of talk in the media about government policy and shifting consumer behavior
, including changing our approach to best before labeling in Canada and
harmonizing rules on food donations and extra food opportunities.
Eco Eats is having a social and
environmental impact and successfully finalizing their app on the Google and
Apple store this fall. In addition to the app design, Eco Eats has a carbon
offset program where they purchase their Carbon Offsets to grow trees and fund
other environmental projects.
When asked why they aim for a Net Zero
Carbon Delivery Service, Gennae Gedeon the Founder and CEO said “supporting and
acting upon Environment and Social Impact initiatives are very important.
Especially during pivotal times when our Foot-print has been incredibly high.
Covid may have slow or reduced our commute, but the work isn’t finished yet and
creating an environmentally sound business is going to be key to our future.”
